Colombia and the energy transition

Beyond the manipulation of information, the war in Ukraine has as its background the struggle for dominance of the European energy market between the United States and Russia. It is also a war between these powers for supremacy in the control of gas pipelines and energy resources in Central Asia.

A war in which the big winners are the United States, Russia, India, China, the multinationals that control the world's raw materials markets, the US and Russian military complexes, the big arms manufacturers and the big banks of the United States and Britain. The big losers: Ukraine and Europe. Ukraine is just one piece in the dark web of a series of interlocking wars that are having incalculable repercussions on the world economy. On the one hand, a global energy crisis and on the other an economic and food crisis with global repercussions. It is clear that the economic and financial sanctions against Russia have had an enormous impact on global supply chains, given the weight of the Russian economy in the world.

Sanctions that, while affecting the Russian economy, have strangled European economies by cutting off gas supplies from Russia. Cuts that have led to the ruin of Germany, Europe's leading economy.

The US gamble was to play Germany and Russia off against each other in order to break Europe's leading economy. Secret documents have been revealed on how the US orchestrated the plan to provoke Russia, to bring about war and pit the Germans against the Russians and, of course, to generate a domino effect throughout the EU and then to put a weakened and economically struggling Europe at the service of its strategic interests.

Europe has been forced to buy liquefied gas from the US at higher prices than it imported from Russia. The Americans with their war manipulations are profiting enormously from the European energy crisis.

Due to the effects of the energy war, the policy goals of the transition from fossil to clean energy have been left "to be seen" in the world. The biggest failure has been in Germany, where plans for decarbonisations and transitions from fossil to clean energy - solar and wind - have failed. In fact, Germans have returned to coal-fired power generation

In France, Emanuel Macron's administration is playing a cat-and-mouse game, developing plans to further increase nuclear power generation and opposing gas integration with Spain so as not to affect its strategic interests as an energy exporter.

On the other hand, Britain authorises the use of fracking in the search for energy sovereignty and security. Meanwhile, the United States is playing a multiplayer game, talking about climate change, green economy, energy transition and clean energy. However, it is granting new licences for oil and gas exploration and exploitation in federal domains. At the same time, it is increasing its coal, oil and gas production and exports to Europe.

In the context of US and Russian economic and geostrategic interests for supremacy in energy markets, it is good to examine the statistics on energy production in Colombia.

There are 431,117 households in Colombia that do not have access to energy services. Of these, 1.2 million rural families cook with firewood. In terms of greenhouse gas emissions, of the 51.1 billion tonnes emitted worldwide, Colombia emits only 0.57%. Meanwhile, China, the United States, India and Russia are the world's leading polluters with 30.65%, 13.54%, 7.20% and 4.52%.

In Colombia, land use, agriculture, livestock and deforestation are responsible for 59% of greenhouse gas emissions and the energy sector accounts for 14% of emissions. 68.4% of Colombia's electricity generation comes from hydroelectric plants, 30.6% from thermal generation, of which 13.3% from natural gas, 7.8% from liquid fuels, 9.5% from coal and only 1% from wind, solar and biomass sources. In other words, 69.4% of the energy consumed in Colombia is clean energy. Conclusion: Colombia's electricity generation matrix is one of the cleanest in the world.
