Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris

With the inauguration of President Joe Biden, the United States has entered a key period to recover from Trump's disasters. Domestically, to consolidate policies of equality, health, education, solidarity, immigration and, above all, to recover the unity of Americans. Internationally, to return to the multilateral spaces from which it should never have left and to apply policies of closeness with strategic partners. This is a challenge for the Biden administration, which will have to work hard in the first few months to bring about the reality of a change in both scenarios.

However, I would like to focus attention on the role of Vice President Kamala Harris. At 56, she is the second highest-ranking and the first woman to hold the office. Most international analysts see Harris as the future President of the United States of America. Her role as Vice President will be nothing like previous ones: she must be very close to Biden, supporting his policies both at home with permanent visits to the states and abroad, where we will see her participating in multilateral summits and making state visits.

Four years to prepare and organise her candidacy very well, to win the affection of the public and respect in the international arena. It will not be difficult for her to do this job with Biden, as from the very first moment she will be assigned tasks and functions far beyond the usual vice-presidential role, working as a tandem and, be warned, fully ready to take over the office of president in the event of Biden's own death or incapacity.

Kamala Harris has demonstrated her ability as a prosecutor and Senator, her passion for social policy and her commitment to women's equality. In a world that is primarily a man's world, she has been able to make her way with firmness and clarity of purpose. She will work closely with all the Secretaries, especially the Secretary of State and the Chief of Staff, coordinating all the work with Biden. She knows what the challenge is and how difficult it will be for her to achieve it. But she is willing to put up a fight in what could mean her presence as President of the United States until 2032. Quite a challenge on the agenda of a young and prepared politician.

We must pay attention to each and every one of his moves (agreed with Biden), in order to interpret his progress towards the 2024 goal. I know that she already has a team of experts in place to plan all her work over the next four years, who will slowly but surely develop a strategy for her run for the presidency. The opinion polls also put her in a good position, even before she takes office.

In any case, in politics four years are an eternity and a thousand things can happen that are far removed from this obvious choice of Kamala Harris for the future. Who knows what the months ahead will bring.
