The moment of truth

Scholz, Macron, Draghi, Zelenski

The moment of truth arrives for all of us. Sooner or later we have to give an account and take responsibility for the consequences of our actions and decisions. Successes and mistakes, truths and lies, sincerity and hypocrisy, loyalty and betrayal, goodness and evil, love and heartbreak. We can add everything that everyone can consider transcendent, such as fidelity and coherence in the face of conspiracies and bastard interests.

The fact is that there can be more than one hour of truth in a lifetime. On a personal and family level, on a professional level and, due to its importance, on the level of political leaders. Undoubtedly, elections represent the essential test for citizens to place their trust, or to do so again, in a political leader who assumes the responsibility of governing and administering the interests of all citizens. And at this time of elections, which we describe as a celebration of democracy, a large part of the system's problems are concentrated. Not because citizens freely exercise their right to vote as a fundamental tool of the system, which must be based on respect for the rule of law, freedoms and minorities. But because too many political leaders act and make decisions during their term of office in order to get the votes they need to be re-elected. They and all those who go along with them for their own benefit. All leaders know what they should do to fix, correct, improve and guarantee our model of society and coexistence, but they do not dare to do so because it would cost them re-election. Unfortunately, this happens in every country in the world. In power, ambiguity is used and decisions are disguised to please some and control others.

In short, this type of behaviour over the years has led to a degradation of what we call liberal democracies, which since the Second World War have provided stability and progress in a large part of the world, but which for some years now, due to their errors, inefficiencies and corruption, have allowed authoritarian populisms to emerge. Both on the extreme right and on the extreme left. These are absolutely negative options, as has been seen in various countries. Europe is currently experiencing a moment of truth that conditions the present and the future. Unity of action and reaction is a vital asset and must be demonstrated by facts. We must not only go to Kiev to have our photo taken and express our good intentions; if we really believe that Putin must be stopped, we must send Ukraine what it needs. Nothing comes for free, freedom and democracy do not come for free either.
