The Moroccan national team has been prevented from taking off from Rabat-Salé airport by Algeria's refusal to open its airspace. CAF described it as a "blockade" for the championship

Morocco had said it would not take part in the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations because of the closure of Algerian airspace, which prevented the team from travelling to Constantine. However, arguing a policy of appeasement between the two neighbouring countries, the Moroccan consular representation in Algiers submitted a request on Thursday 12 January to the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It requested the necessary authorisations for the overflight of Algerian airspace and the landing of the plane carrying the Moroccan team in Constantine. Thus, late in the day, the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed its participation in the Africa Cup of Nations pending this flight.

The president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, recognised this decision by Algeria as a "blockage" for the championship itself. "I want Morocco to be in Algeria. I want these youngsters to represent the people of Morocco and the people of Africa," Motsepe told the press on a trip to Rabat after the draw for the FIFA Club World Cup, which was being held at the Mohamed VI Academy in Salé.

Morocco's absence is a major loss for the tournament. The Atlas Lions have been winners of the last two editions of the CHAN in 2018 and 2020, surprise package at the World Cup in Qatar and favourites to win this latest edition. Faced with the situation, CAF will have to adapt the tournament and face a group B reduced at the last minute to just three teams: Sudan, Madagascar and Ghana.

This image of the Moroccan team waiting at the airport is relatively similar to the one experienced by the Moroccan Olympic delegation and nine journalists accompanying them at Oran International Airport in Algeria during the Mediterranean Games. The Algerian police denied the Moroccan delegation a return flight to Rabat.
