The Economic Society of Friends of the Country of Malaga, as part of its Casa América Project, the International Commission of Hispanists and the Héroes de Cavite Cultural Association sponsor "Past and Present of Hispanic Globalisation"

Autumn Americanist Conference in Malaga

On Friday 28th October 2022, the Economic Society of Friends of the Country of Malaga, as part of its Casa América Project, the International Commission of Hispanists and the Héroes de Cavite Cultural Association, are sponsoring a series of conferences with Americanist content under the title "Past and present of Hispanic globalisation", coordinated by Jorge Chauca García.

The conference will take place from 18:00 to 21:00 in the Assembly Hall of the Economic Society, under the watchful eye of the illustrious monarch Charles III and with the permission of his Minister of the Indies, José de Gálvez from Malaga, in the adjoining room.

José María Ruiz Povedano, president of the Economic Society of Friends of the Country, will open the event. After the obligatory introduction and acknowledgements, the following speakers will take the floor: Jorge Chauca García ( The actuality of the past: the critical America of the Bicentenary at the crossroads), professor at the Faculty of Educational Sciences of the University of Málaga, with an exercise in reflection on the bicentenaries on both sides of the Atlantic world; then, David Cuevas Góngora ( Malagueños in the Pacific: from Magellan to the discovery of the Solomon Islands), lecturer in the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts at the UMA, who will talk about the so-called Spanish lake and the presence of Malaga in such a colossal space; after a suitable break, Fernando Mogaburo López (Tercios de Málaga y tercios de Ultramar), military researcher and cavalry lieutenant in the reserve, will speak on the study of the legendary tercios in our city and in Spanish America; finally, and prior to the closing session, Juan Carlos Sánchez Mateos ( Tears and Hispano-American praise for Viceroy Bernardo de Gálvez), historian and member of the Bernardo de Gálvez y Gallardo Cultural Association, will present a lesser-known episode of the justly famous macharatungo Bernardo de Gálvez, a liaison figure between Spain and America.

The four historians, linked to the University of Malaga and the cultural world of the city of Malaga, aim to strengthen the social function of history by establishing institutional links open to society as a fundamental value of research and dissemination. As well as strengthening the connections between Spain and Latin America through the Casa América Project in Malaga. All Malagueños, Latin Americans and visitors are expected to attend this day of brotherhood in such an emblematic place in the historic centre as the headquarters of the Economic Society of Friends of the Country.
