The Axis Moscow-Beijing: What does it mean for Peace, Security and Prosperity of Europe

Naumann evento 11

Russia invaded Ukraine, China aims to invade Taiwan. The autocratic leaders in the Kremlin and in Beijing, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, have shifted their nations from status quo- to revisionist countries. Both “strongmen” share an ideology of racial superiority and the legitimacy of land grab. Both have disdain for freedom, democracy and human rights.

Both have expanded their influence massively in the last decade, Russia through gas and oil, China through the Road and Belt initiative. The Chinese Communist Party has already gained a say in European countries such as Serbia, Hungary and Italy.

European leaders need to now learn from the mistakes of the past: How can they conceal Russia and prevent the Chinese leader, who already has border conflicts with most of its neighbors, from invading Taiwan? One measure that is already being deployed is the de-coupling of the economies of the free world from those in Russia and China. But will this be enough?

The panel "The Axis Moscow-Beijing: What does it mean for Peace, Security and Prosperity of Europe?” will discuss these questions and articulate potential strategies which ultimately give Europe back agency over its destiny.
