The Caja de las Letras will receive a bequest "in memoriam" from Ernesto Sábato
The Cervantes Institute in Madrid will pay tribute to Ernesto Sábato this Wednesday, 11 January, at 10 a.m., by receiving a legacy "in memoriam" from the Argentinian writer, winner of the 1984 Cervantes Prize, at the Caja de las Letras.
The ceremony to receive the legacy of Ernesto Sábato (Rojas, 24 June 1911-Santos Lugares, 30 April 2011), presided over by Luis García Montero, director of the Cervantes Institute, will be attended by Mario Sábato, writer and filmmaker, son of the honoured author; Esteban Avilés, president of the Córdoba Tourism Agency of the province of Córdoba (Argentina); Sebastián Boldrini, secretary of Tourism of the Municipality of Villa Carlos Paz (Argentina), and Pedro Jorge Solans, writer and journalist.
Ernesto Sábato, after whom the library of the Cervantes Institute in Budapest is named, was the author of essays and novels which also won him other prizes such as the Gabriela Mistral Prize, awarded in 1983 by the Organisation of American States (OAS), the Menéndez Pelayo Prize in 1997 and the Rosalía de Castro Prize in 2002.
A defender of rights and values opposed to Argentina's dictatorial policies, the author of El túnel (1948) was elected president of the National Commission on the Disappearance of Persons (CONADEP) in 1984, which drafted the Sábato Report, known in Spain as "Nunca más".
