The Cervantes Institute of Tetouan in Morocco is organising the virtual conference 'The psychological impact of the COVID-19', which will be given (in Spanish with simultaneous translation into Arabic) by the eminent psychiatrist Mehdi Paes this Tuesday 24 November at 6.30 pm.

Dr. Mehdi Paes, in this fourth session of the online conference cycle 'In times of COVID-19: medicine, economy and culture', will analyse the psychological impact that this pandemic has had on us: how have we tolerated isolation and social distancing, what types of reactions have been detected, can we prevent negative psychological reactions...The coronavirus 2019 pandemic has had very important consequences, both on health and on the economy, and has practically disrupted all of our activities and our way of life.

Its appearance at the end of 2019 has been brutal, unexpected and unprecedented. No country was prepared for this serious pandemic. It is clear that the COVID-19 has represented and still represents a risk factor for physical health (cardiorespiratory consequences, neurological and other sequelae and even death) and we should also ask ourselves what the psychological impact is. COVID-19 constitutes a real threat to the integrity of individuals. It is also an invisible, unpredictable and permanent enemy. It clearly generates great concern, unrest, fear, anxiety and perhaps more important psychic reactions.

What psychological impact has it had? What kind of psychic reactions have been most frequent? Has everyone reacted the same? How has social confinement and alienation been tolerated? How can negative psychological reactions be prevented? This conference will address this issue by trying to answer the questions raised by this pandemic, knowing that it is a phenomenon about which we still have little perspective.

Professor Mehdi Paes studied Medicine at the Faculty of Zaragoza and specialised in Psychiatry at the University of Bordeaux. He has carried out numerous activities and has held various posts, in particular he has been Professor of Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine in Rabat, head of the Department of Psychiatry and Medical Psychology in the same faculty, director of the University Psychiatric Hospital ARRAZI in Rabat-Salé, advisor on Mental Health and Addictions with numerous national and international institutions (Ministry of Health, WHO, ONUDC, Mentor Foundation, CIPAT...).

He has also contributed to the development of psychiatry in Morocco and has been a founding member and president for years of the Moroccan Society of Psychiatry. He currently practices in the field of "liberal psychiatry" and collaborates with many national and international scientific societies. He is a member of the Sections of Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis and of Dual Pathology of the World Association of Psychiatry.
