The Cervantes Institute takes part in the International Book Fair in Buenos Aires
The Director of the Cervantes Institute, Luis García Montero, will be in Argentina from 12 to 15 May, where he will present a round table on the future of Spanish, will attend a meeting with Hispanists and will take part in various activities organised by Cervantes at the 46th Buenos Aires International Book Fair. The Cervantes programme, in permanent contact with Latin America, will also be completed with the inauguration, on Tuesday 10 May, of the José Emilio Pacheco Library at the Cervantes of Chicago, named in tribute to the Mexican writer.
The programme of activities in Argentina, in collaboration with the Spanish Embassy, will begin on Thursday 12 May at the Editorial Universitaria de Buenos Aires (EUDEBA), where García Montero will present, together with the Rector of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), Alberto Barbieri, the round table "The future of Spanish: a regional strategy" (12 noon). The director of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), Inma Aguilar Nàcher, and Mabel Giammatteo, professor at the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature of the UBA, will be the moderator of the round table, with Catalina Nosiglia, Secretary for Academic Affairs of the Rectorate of the UBA, as moderator.
The following day, Friday, there will be two institutional events to strengthen the ties of collaboration between the Instituto Cervantes and Argentina. The Minister of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires, Enrique Avogadro, accompanied by the President of the National Academy of Folklore, Antonio Rodríguez Villar, will present the diploma of Guest of Honour to García Montero, who will give a lecture entitled "Poesía y folklore" (11 a.m.) at the Ministry of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires.
Afterwards, in the Chancellery of the Spanish Legation (4 p.m.), the Meeting with Hispanists will take place, in which García Montero will participate along with 15 other guests - professors, lecturers, researchers, linguists and writers.
The Cervantes Institute's presence at the 46th Buenos Aires International Book Fair, one of the most important cultural events in Latin America, will kick off on Thursday 12 May with " Invitation to a sonorous journey. A Cantata for verse and lutes" (18:30 h), with the Aguilar and García Montero Quartet, a show of poetry and music that recreates that which Rafael Alberti and the old quartet performed in the 1940s and 1950s. The show will also be performed at the Teatro Real de Córdoba (Argentina), on Saturday 14 May.
On Friday 13 May, Galician and Catalan will be the protagonists of the round table (20:30h) "Narrators in co-official languages in Spain" organised by the Cervantes in collaboration with the Consello de Cultura Galega and the Ramón Llull Institute. The director of Cervantes will speak alongside the author with two Xerais Awards (2021) and the Critics' Prize for Galician narrative (2019), Berta Dávila; the anthropologist and storyteller, Adriá Pujol, and the writer Marta Sanz, winner of the Herralde Novel Prize (2015) and finalist for the Nadal Prize (2006).
Previously (6:30 pm) and in the same space, García Montero will participate in the "Tribute to Almudena Grandes", readings of texts by the Madrid writer, together with the director of Tusquets Argentina, Paola Lucantis, and the journalist Diana Fernández Irusta.
A few days earlier, on Tuesday 10 May, the Cervantes Library in Chicago will open its library on a festive daybased on the figure of José Emilio Pacheco, the Mexican writer after whom the space is named. The programme will kick off with the opening of the exhibition "José Emilio Pacheco: Eight Decades of Play and Affection", a retrospective consisting of 25 books and twenty panels, curated by José Mariano Leyva and Geney Beltrán, which portrays the fundamental aspects of the Mexican author's life.
Luis García Montero will take part in a round table discussion (17:30) on the figure of the Mexican Cervantes Prize winner, together with the writer, editor and translator, Laura Emiliana Pacheco, daughter of the honoree; and the writer Rosa Beltrán, coordinator of Cultural Dissemination at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). The colloquium will be moderated by Reyna Torres Mendivil, Consul General of Mexico in Chicago.
