On the occasion of the celebration of Egypt's National Day, the Ambassador of Egypt in Spain, Youssef Mekkawy, hosted a reception at his residence where he wished to highlight the "formidable" relations that unite Spain with the Arab Republic of Egypt.

In his words of thanks, Mekkawy said that both Spain and Egypt "have always worked together to continue to maintain an important level of cooperation and coordination in all sectors". In this context, he highlighted the visit of the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, in December 2021, which demonstrated "the high level of cooperation between Spain and Egypt".

With the same objective of strengthening relations and cooperation between the two countries, the ambassador highlighted the visit of the Egyptian Foreign Minister to Madrid in April 2022 as "another example of the good relationship".

In these meetings, held between Madrid and Cairo, one of the main topics on the agenda was climate change, especially relevant since Egypt will host the 27th United Nations conference on climate change, which will have Spain as one of the guest countries.

On the other hand, for Egypt, the promotion of the economy between the two countries is "a priority", which is why it is an area in which work continues to be carried out assiduously. According to the ambassador, "Spanish investments in Egypt have reached eight hundred million dollars and 215 Spanish companies have been set up in Egypt", ranging from transport, services and tourism to construction and finance.

Mekkawy affirmed that Egypt and Spain have created a "solid partnership" that benefits "the two friendly countries". Likewise, the ambassador gave as an example the creation of the Joint Business Council where the Declaration of Financial Cooperation has been signed through which "our values and proposals are carried out in joint missions abroad".

Celebration of Egypt's National Day

In addition to highlighting the good relations that unite the two countries, Mekkawy wanted to commemorate 23 July 1952 as a day to which "all Egyptians will always be grateful, as it marks the date on which Egyptians wanted to fight for their own destiny".

On this path to building a strong and sovereign Egypt, he stressed that the country is making "great efforts in its development plans, increasing construction land by 40,000 kilometres and completing the construction of 64 housing estates and smart cities in Cairo". He also underlined Egypt's important position in terms of trade, as the country "has become one of the most important exporters in the region and one of the biggest exporters of energy".

In addition, he reiterated "the increase in the budget that the country has approved to invest in education, scientific research and in the construction of dozens of schools and universities" and in "the expansion of the Suez Canal and in the cultivation of fertile land".

Alongside this, the commitment to the energy sector has not been excluded from this initiative, as has culture following the opening of the new museum in Cairo "with the majestic procession of the royal mummies, making it the largest museum in the world".

Regarding the fight against COVID-19, Mekkawy noted that, since the beginning of its history, "Egypt has demonstrated its ability to become a stronger country. The country has worked very hard to return to normality and to try to recover while continuing with its economic plans".

He welcomed the country's economic development as "one of the few countries in the world that has managed to grow by 3% during the pandemic". At the same time, he affirmed that "Egypt has worked hard with the international community to face this global challenge".

For this reason, events such as this one demonstrate the good cooperation and the close ties that exist between Egypt and Spain, as well as their desire to continue working together to continue drawing a common path of mutual benefit.
