The United Arab Emirates Red Crescent Society (ERC) continues to cooperate in addressing the ravages of the floods that hit Sudan by providing additional humanitarian assistance to those affected in several Sudanese states.

ERC sent an 11-truck aid convoy to Kassala state in eastern Sudan just hours ago, carrying 150 tonnes of food and shelter materials, pesticides and medicines to combat pandemics, benefiting some 10,000 people.

Mohammed Ateeq al-Falahi, secretary general of ERC, said that the cooperation work in Sudan is due to the initiative of Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces, and Hamdan bin Zayed al-Nahyan, representative of the ruler in the region of Al-Dhafra and president of ERC.

ERC has strengthened its presence in many Sudanese states and has expanded the scope of its work to include more flood-affected areas, Al-Falahi added, noting that the presence of an ERC delegation in Sudan has contributed to the diversity and quality of services provided to those affected by the disaster and that there has also been an increase in the number of beneficiaries.

ERC receives daily reports from its local teams on the local humanitarian situation and responds accordingly for the benefit of those affected. It highlights the work of ERC's partners in the Sudanese country, in particular the Emirate Embassy in Khartoum and the relevant Sudanese authorities, to ensure the success of its activities and programmes.

Tribal leaders in Eastern Sudan praised the continued support and leadership of the Emirates in Sudan, especially in Kassala State.

In addition, the University of Abu Dhabi (ADU) also launched a new initiative, in collaboration with the ERC, Lulu Group International and PepsiCo, to provide livelihoods to Sudanese families affected by the recent flood crisis.

The initiative, entitled "For Sudan", aims to raise both cash and in-kind donations to be sent to affected Sudanese families.
