Emirates sends aid against COVID-19 to Jordan, Colombia and Dominican Republic

As part of efforts to strengthen the capacity of the health sector in various countries to overcome the COVID-19 disease crisis, the United Arab Emirates this week sent a relief plane containing 12.4 metric tons of medical supplies to Jordan. The assistance will benefit approximately 12,000 medical professionals as they work to contain the virus.

Ahmed Ali al-Balushi, the UAE ambassador to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, said: "What unites the UAE and Jordan is a true brotherhood that is firmly rooted in all political, economic, social and popular spheres. It is a model of distinguished Arab relations that are characterized by stability, depth and synergy on various fronts, and is characterized by constructive cooperation in many areas at the official and popular levels.

"The delivery of medical aid to Jordan today is a continuation of this approach of strong and distinguished relations and the support of the leaders and people of the United Arab Emirates for our brothers in Jordan to stop the spread of the COVID-19," he added.

To date, the UAE has responded to the COVID-19 crisis by providing more than 935 metric tonnes of aid to 66 countries in need, supporting more than 935,000 medical professionals in the process.

Cooperation with Latin America

The United Arab Emirates has sent an aid plane with eight metric tons of medical supplies to Colombia. The aid will serve approximately 8,000 medical professionals in their work to contain the virus. Commenting on the aid delivery, Salem Rashed Salem al-Owais, UAE ambassador to Colombia, said: "The UAE is very interested, by virtue of its policy of cooperation and solidarity, in developing its relations with many countries around the world. Despite the distance between our two countries, bilateral relations have witnessed a remarkable development on all fronts, and the provision of medical assistance today affirms the strength of these relations.”

"The United Arab Emirates is always by the side of friendly countries and provides them with a helping hand, especially in these circumstances, which the whole world is facing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The UAE hopes that medical assistance will help improve the capacity of medical and nursing staff by providing them with additional protection," he added. On April 8, the UAE already sent 10 metric tons of medical supplies to Colombia to help the country's efforts to stop the spread of the coronavirus, benefiting more than 10,000 health professionals. The same flight repatriated 63 Colombian citizens from the UAE.

The UAE also has sent a relief plane carrying seven metric tons of medical supplies to the Dominican Republic. This aid will help approximately 7,000 medical professionals in their work to contain the virus, reinforcing the country's efforts to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Commenting on the aid delivery, Bader Abdullah al-Matroshi, UAE ambassador to Cuba and non-resident ambassador to the Dominican Republic, said: "Based on the UAE's leading and humanitarian role in providing assistance in times of crisis and using all possibilities to help other countries, a relief plane with urgent medical supplies has been sent to the Dominican Republic. This assistance aims to strengthen relations with the Dominican Republic and will help medical workers fight the pandemic.
