The United Arab Emirates is taking its first steps in the recovery of the different sectors after the economic and social consequences of the pandemic. In particular, thanks to the momentum of Expo 2020, the food and beverage sector is expected to bounce back with sales expected to increase during the six months of the Expo.

In this regard, Atelier House CEO Panchali Manhedra said, "The food and beverage sector has always been recognised as a very competitive sector, so UAE concepts may be replaced by newer and better, or more experienced competitors, but they will always have the opportunity to thrive."

Mahendra also told Arabian Business that the UAE is becoming "a major food and beverage trading hub in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, with more than 20,000 restaurants". Moreover, according to the UAE's National Food Security Strategy 2051, the country is reportedly targeting to enter the top 10 of the Global Food Security Index, achieving an economic return of up to AED 22 billion in the food sector by this year.

However, Mahendra pointed out that the hospitality sector, badly affected by the pandemic, could take two more years to regain its former position. "There is not much you can prepare for, except to keep your pockets full for an emergency. All you have to do is react," he said.

In addition, in order to encourage the recovery of this sector, Expo 2020 will feature the participation of its main sponsor PepsiCo, one of the world's leading food and beverage companies. In addition, to promote the value of sustainability, Expo 2020 will contribute to the sustainable development of the planet by promoting Pepsi's new 100% aluminium, fully recyclable cans.
