Ethiopia begins to fill the Great Dam of the Renaissance in the Blue Nile
Ethiopia has begun to fill its controversial Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) in the Blue Nile, despite not reaching an agreement with the other two riparian countries, Egypt and Sudan, the Ethiopian government reported on Wednesday.
In a statement to state television, Ethiopian Minister of Water, Irrigation and Energy Seleshi Bekele announced that landfill operations had begun in July, as promised by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government.
The announcement came after the failure this week of the latest round of dialogue between Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan to reach an agreement on the dam, which Cairo strongly opposes, in a dispute that poses a risk to the stability of the region.
