Morocco is hosting the Power-to-X World Summit, an event that aims to seek innovation and new strategies in the field of renewable energies, as well as serving as a nexus for many countries to sign energy agreements. Held in Marrakech by the Institut de Recherche en Energie Solaire et Energies Nouvelles (IRESEN) and attended by many European countries, all were keen to praise the Kingdom's potential in the field of renewable energies. The meeting's participants agreed that the North African country is a leader in this sector thanks to the implementation of sustainable projects and, as a result, has entered fully into a safe and clean energy transition.

The event was attended by investors, politicians, entrepreneurs and research experts in the field of renewable energies. In addition to classic renewable energies, Morocco has started to produce green hydrogen, which is attracting European interest. The nations of the Old Continent have emphasised the opportunity offered by this sustainable alternative and by-products

Europe is looking for energy alternatives in the wake of the current international situation. The Russian-Ukrainian conflict has made it clear that EU countries cannot depend on Russia for their energy supplies, and renewable energies are one of their main goals to solve the shortage of energy resources.

Green hydrogen could be a great alternative for decarbonising European industries, and Morocco has already been involved in the production of this resource for some time. It is a renewable energy that is produced from clean electricity, obtained from solar or wind power, and undergoes a process of electrolysis to create it. As a result, it becomes an endless source of energy.

European ministers praise Morocco for its progress in the field of ecology

European ministers attending the summit pointed out that the Alawi kingdom is the key to supplying the European Union with this resource and, thanks to its assets, could be the main supplier.

"Morocco has significant potential to develop this new sector of the energy transition and can become a key supplier of green hydrogen," said Rob Jetten, Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Action of the Netherlands. He also recalled the partnership between the two countries in the fight against climate change and pointed out that several Dutch companies have started working with the Kingdom on projects related to the production of green hydrogen. "Morocco and the Netherlands recognise the importance of green hydrogen in the energy transition to decarbonise our economies," he concluded.

Svenja Schuelze, Germany’s Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development recalled that both countries are already working on obtaining green hydrogen through cooperation in establishing a hydrogen generation plant that in three years' time, hydrogen will finally be viable.

"The construction of this production unit will be an important milestone for the realisation of our common vision," she said. However, she called on other countries to follow suit and switch to green hydrogen to reduce their carbon footprint. Schuelze praised the Kingdom and pointed out that both green hydrogen and other new sustainable resources are crucial to meeting the Paris Agreements.

Belgian Energy Minister Tinne Van Der Straeten highlighted Morocco's work in the fight against climate deterioration and noted the importance of holding this summit as an effort by the entire international community in favour of the planet and new technologies as an alternative to the use of fossil and polluting energies.

"We can realise the dream of building a zero carbon society if we work hand in hand," said the Belgian minister. However, she also stressed the significance of cooperation between Europe and Africa, pointing out the important prospects for cooperation in the field of renewable energies and how beneficial this would be for climate change.
