King Felipe VI of Spain on Saturday congratulated the monarch Mohammed VI of Morocco on his 22 years on the throne, which were completed yesterday, and conveyed the "deep shared friendship", according to the text of the message released by the Moroccan agency MAP.

Felipe VI, who said he was speaking on his own behalf "and on behalf of the Spanish government and people," expressed to the Alaouite sovereign "best wishes of health and prosperity to the very dear friendly Moroccan people."

Likewise, the King of Spain expressed his "most sincere congratulations and best wishes for the well-being of the sovereign and the Royal Family" of Morocco, according to MAP.

This is the first letter between the two monarchs since the outbreak last April of the diplomatic crisis between Morocco and Spain, which was triggered by the presence of the leader of the Polisario Front, Brahim Ghali, in Spain after being secretly admitted to a hospital in Logroño.

The Maghreb country reacted by allowing an avalanche of thousands of irregular immigrants to enter Ceuta on May 17 and 18 and calling its ambassador in Madrid, Karima Benyaich, for consultations.

On May 29, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchez, recommended, in a press conference at the Moncloa Palace, to act with "discretion" to try to resolve the diplomatic crisis with Morocco, which he defined as "a strategic partner" for Spain.
