Gabriel Corujo, President of the Free Trade Zone of Gran Canaria, has signed a cooperation protocol with the Council of the Dakhla Region, in the presence of its President, Yanja El Khattat.

The signing of the protocol took place in front of the Dakhla Conference Centre, packed with Moroccan and Spanish businessmen on the occasion of the first edition of the Spain-Morocco Investment Forum.

The protocol, applauded by the Moroccan authorities and Spanish civil society, represents, in the words of the president of the Free Zone of Gran Canaria, a "great and first step in the cooperation between Canary Islands companies and the regional government of the Dakhla Region".

For his part, the Saharawi Yanja El Khattat also welcomed the signing of the cooperation protocol between the free zone and his government. In the words of the president of the region, strengthening relations between the autonomous bodies of Spain and Morocco is the ultimate and main purpose of a forum such as the investors in Dakhla.

Gabriel Corujo clarified after the signing of the document that "there is a great desire on the part of the companies that are part of the Gran Canaria Free Trade Zone to reach the Sahara and Dakhla and to be able to weave new trade relations and establish themselves in the area. This document is one more step to help them in this process".

The Free Zone of Gran Canaria thus becomes one of the first Spanish business associations and the archipelago to close a firm agreement with the regional authorities of the Moroccan-administered Sahara for the purpose of economic promotion.

The organisation headed by Gabriel Corujo is a consortium of companies located in an industrial park on the island of Gran Canaria, which operates as a whole and with the fiscal and economic advantages that the Canary Islands benefit from due to their special situation.
