Frida Kahlo

Fundación Casa de México in Spain is pleased to announce the most eagerly awaited exhibition, 'Frida Kahlo: wings to fly', showing a selection of 31 original works and 91 photographs by the world's best-known artist from 7 May. In its mission to showcase the greatness of Mexico through its culture, gastronomy and business opportunities, Fundación Casa de México in Spain marks a milestone by showing the second solo exhibition of a Mexican heritage artist, the first being 'Diego Rivera: universal artist' in 2019.

The exhibition is made up of 31 original works from two private collections, one of them from the Museo Dolores Olmedo. On display are ten of the most famous of his self-portraits, including: 'The Broken Column', 'Diego and I', 'Self-Portrait with a Changuito', 'My Nanny and I', 'Henry Ford Hospital'. In addition to videos and photographs by the renowned Mexican photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo.

'Frida Kahlo: wings to fly' focuses not only on the complex artistic production of the Mexican painter, but also on the human one. The exhibition explores the biographical context and the intimate part; it invites the viewer to enjoy the aesthetic and to understand the historical moment in which she lived. Throughout the four exhibition rooms, Casa de México offers the public the opportunity to get to know, in the greatest depth, this Mexican artist who managed to convey themes that are still relevant today: pain, death, the vindication of women, gender violence, relationships, motherhood, the human body, nature, pre-Hispanic heritage and the Mexican.

"We hope that the astonishment and enthusiasm of our visitors as they come face to face with Frida's works will allow them not only to learn more about the artist but also more about themselves," said Ximena Caraza Campos, general director of Fundación Casa de México in Spain.

Frida Kahlo

'Frida Kahlo: wings to fly' is an exhibition that focuses on the artist and her work, not on the character. The exhibition looks at Frida's pictorial production. It seeks to rescue her contributions to the history of painting in two fundamental aspects: the construction of Mexican nationalism and the portrayal of the female body.

Through the 31 works, 91 photographs and an installation with pages from her diary, the visitor will identify two important moments in Frida's life and career. The first, in which she portrayed friends, family and acquaintances, influenced by the European tradition and the artistic movements of the time. And the second, following her marriage to Diego Rivera in 1929, when she incorporated Mexican elements into her paintings.
