Israel and Gaza exchanged rockets in the early hours of Friday morning in a new escalation of violence in the area after nine Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank on Thursday.

"In response to rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip, the Israel Defence Forces struck an underground rocket manufacturing centre belonging to the Hamas terrorist organisation in Maghazi in the central Gaza Strip," an Israeli army spokesman said.

The air strikes were launched from Gaza with five rockets that set off missile alarms in Israeli areas bordering the coastal enclave: three of them were intercepted by Israel's air defence system, one fell in unpopulated areas and one inside the Gaza Strip, the same source added.
