The "la Caixa" Foundation's Programme of Aid for Social Initiatives Projects has selected 170 projects in the Community of Madrid to which it will allocate more than 4.5 million euros. The allocation of this new territorial call, which increases by 84.85% with respect to that of 2021, will boost the action of the third sector and will allow 40,819 Madrid citizens in a situation of vulnerability to be attended to.

Six priority areas of action

In order to continue responding to the emerging needs of society, the projects had to be framed within one of the following six areas of action:

1 - Fight against poverty and social exclusion: the common denominator of the people targeted by these initiatives is vulnerability and, in many cases, overlapping multivulnerabilities. Nearly half of the selected projects focus on the social and educational development of children and adolescents in vulnerable situations and also incorporate work focused on their families. In this area, the three projects that received the highest scores from the programme were:

  • "La Morada Housing First for homeless women survivors of gender violence" by the AIRES Association.
  • "Proyecto tu casa" by the Community of the Oblate Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer.
  • "Much More Than Music" of the Foundation for Social Action for Music.

2 - People with disabilities or mental disorders: most of the initiatives selected have holistic approaches and are aimed at people with disabilities, especially intellectual disabilities. Proposals have also been selected to support people with sensory disabilities, physical disabilities, disabling illnesses, mental disorders and autistic spectrum disorders, among others. In this area, the three most highly rated projects were:

  • "Access to New Digital Technologies for People with Intellectual Disabilities" by the Aranjuez-Persons with Intellectual Disabilities Association (Integrandes).
  • "Resource Programme for families of people with intellectual disabilities and high support needs" of the Resource Association ANTARES.
  • "Diferentes somos tod@s" of the Club Deportivo Elemental Amigos Valderas.

3 - Socio-labour insertion: most of the projects work on the basis of Personalised Itineraries of Insertion. One in four addresses the feminisation of poverty and one third focuses on the young multi-vulnerable population. In this area, the three most highly rated projects were:

  • "Cooking opportunities: socio-occupational improvement of young people at risk and/or exclusion" by the CESAL Association.
  • "Itinerary of socio-occupational insertion with training in electricity for young people at risk of exclusion" by the Norte Joven Cultural Association.
  • "DEmpleo" of the Association " Eslabón Iniciativas de Promoción de Empleo".

4 - Elderly people and challenges derived from ageing: more than half of the projects promote personal autonomy and prevention of frailty. The rest of the selected initiatives focus on prevention and intervention in situations of unwanted loneliness. In this area, the three most highly rated projects were:

  • "Active Ageing" by the Nazareth Association.
  • "Olivo: Intervention with the Elderly in Prison" by the Spanish Prison Fellowship
  • " Accomplices: Think, feel and act" by the Association of Relatives of people affected by Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and other neurodegenerative diseases in Parla.

5 - Humanisation of health: socio-health and psychosocial care for people in a situation of illness, advanced illness and at the end of life. In this area, the three most highly rated projects were:

  • "Theatre to embrace" by the Fundación Teatro Joven, aimed at children and young people hospitalised in psychiatric units.
  • Saniclown's "Smile programme for people hospitalised in the Community of Madrid".
  • "Comprehensive care: advanced stages of Parkinson's disease" by the Parkinson Madrid Association.

6 - Interculturality and Social Action: half of the projects focus on education and prevention of behaviour related to addictions and violence. Support is also given to community intervention projects that promote intercultural coexistence. In this area, the three highest rated projects were:

  • "Project Conviviendo Madrid" of the Amigó Foundation, for minors in situations of filio-parental violence.
  • "Jara Socio-educational Centre: Intercultural Social Mediation" by the Barro Association.
  • "Protection of minors against the risks of intensive and non-responsible use of digital media" by the ANAR Foundation.
Impact on the territory

The 170 projects selected by the "la Caixa" Foundation in the Community of Madrid are spread over 21 localities. The city of Madrid, with 132 selected initiatives, is the locality with the highest concentration of projects.

Leganés has four, Alcalá de Henares, Alcorcón, Aranjuez, Getafe, Las Rozas and Parla with three, Fuenlabrada, Móstoles and San Sebastián de los Reyes with two and Casarrubuelos, Ciempozuelos, Collado Villalba, Coslada, El Berrueco, Galapagar, Pozuelo de Alarcón, Torrejón de Ardoz, Tres Cantos and Villaviciosa de Odón with one.

Main novelties of the call in 2022

Until this year, the "la Caixa" Foundation's Programme of Grants for Social Initiatives Projects had a national scope. From this year onwards, the entity is launching a total of 20 calls, 18 of which are territorial, one for each autonomous community and another for Ceuta and Melilla. Only the calls for social action in rural areas and international cooperation remain national in scope.

The new territorial model of the calls for proposals aims to bring these aids closer to the people in vulnerable situations and to the non-profit organisations in each territory, in this case the Community of Madrid.

"We are aware of the extraordinary effort being made by social organisations in recent years due to the chain of crises. That is why we have increased the allocation and made it easier to access the grants in this new call for applications. Our aim is to be closer than ever to the third sector, to promote as many projects as possible that have an impact on the people who need them most and allow us to continue moving forward together towards a fairer society", explained the Deputy Director General of the "la Caixa" Foundation, Marc Simón.

In addition to the new territorial model, the Social Calls 2022 incorporate a new distribution of the economic endowment, which is established on the basis of the population of each autonomous community. Other new features incorporated in 2022 are the increase from 40,000 to 50,000 euros in the maximum amount that can be requested per project and the simplification of the project presentation form, to facilitate the participation of all entities.
