The second edition of 'No home without food', promoted by the "la Caixa" Foundation, with the support of CaixaBank, closed with a total of 2.2 million euros raised. With this amount, 2,386 tonnes of basic foodstuffs have been collected, which will be distributed among the 54 Food Banks associated with the Spanish Federation of Food Banks (FESBAL). Thanks to this action, more than 45,000 people in vulnerable situations will have a guaranteed basic food supply throughout the summer.

The aim of the 'No Household without Food' campaign in favour of the Food Banks is to help the people most affected by the collateral effects of COVID-19, who turn to the almost 8,000 collaborating social entities to request food. According to the recent Living Conditions Survey conducted by the National Statistics Institute (INE) the rate of risk of poverty or social exclusion (Arope) increased by more than one point, from 25.3% recorded in 2019 to 26.4% in Spain. In addition, 7% of the population was in a situation of severe material deprivation, compared to 4.7% in 2019.

In response to the pressing need, the "la Caixa" Foundation decided to contribute an additional one million euros to the initiative, bringing the total to 2.2 million euros.

"The social emergency resulting from the pandemic persists, which is why we must support those who need it most. The success of this solidarity action shows that together we are stronger, and thanks to the grains of sand contributed, thousands of families will receive food aid. Only in this way, united, will we succeed in eradicating poverty", stressed the Chairman of the "la Caixa" Foundation, Isidro Fainé.

According to FESBAL, the demand for aid increased by around 50% after the start of the pandemic and the Food Banks attended to half a million more people than the previous year. In total, they assisted 1,560,000 people, of whom 360,847 were children between the ages of 0 and 14.

In the wake of the pandemic, FESBAL has detected that the profile of the people who come to it has broadened: now, those in need of food are no longer only people in severe poverty, but also families who before the crisis had medium or low incomes, and young couples who have lost their jobs due to the ERTE and ERE to which different companies have been forced. Moreover, this situation could worsen, according to the food banks, if there is no upturn in the economic recovery.

Committed to action, thousands of people have joined the movement

#NoHomeWithoutFood movement, including celebrities such as the actor Antonio Banderas, the model Vanesa Lorenzo and the chef Ferran Adrià, who have contributed to the visibility of the initiative on social networks, highlighting the commitment of the food banks.
