The project to have a House of America in Malaga is a reality with the support of the Economic Society of Friends of the Country of Malaga.

In a communiqué they have informed that the Governing Board of the Economic Society of Friends of the Country of Malaga was informed of the proposal to create the Casa de América project in Malaga, presented by Mr. Juan Antonio Sierra Lumbreras, Hispanist, collaborator and assiduous participant in all the activities held in Malaga.

"Aware of the purpose, scope and importance of this project, the Board agreed, with a positive assessment, to promote and encourage this cultural and social initiative within the entity's annual Action Plan for the next five years".

They explain that, consequently, in order to carry forward the implementation of this new and important line of action and in accordance with it, a Working Committee is created to proceed with the development of the functions entrusted and the first activities of the 2021-2022 academic year.

Juan Antonio Sierra's proposal is to recover the rapprochement and the historical relationship in this third decade of the 21st century, which is becoming a social, economic and cultural requirement for the city and province of Malaga.

"There are many new elements and challenges that make it necessary to establish this platform-bridge (Casa de América) with the new realities experienced by Latin American countries and the Hispanic communities of the United States and Canada. The Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País de Málaga aims to be the institutional setting for this relationship and knowledge of what is happening today in both spheres (America-Malaga, there and back), within the complex reality of the contemporary world. In particular, in addition to Malaga's role as a cultural, university and technological centre, the city needs to take advantage of the strengths of its economy, the extensive diplomatic/consular network of Latin American countries, the value of the Spanish-language Film Festival, the young and innovative University and, above all, the thousands of Latin American residents who live and work here, who have a culture as diverse as it is enriching".

It is undoubtedly a project that enriches in all factors and meets the conditions to develop and promote, within its Action Plan, the holding of activities (information and conference forum, debate forum, training and study centre), as well as exhibitions in its centenary exhibition halls, the oldest in Malaga and Spain.

What is the Economic Society of Friends of the Country of Malaga?

Founded by by to to to to develop the Enlightenment in the city and its province by the to to promote the wealth of the land, the welfare and culture of the people of Málaga, the Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País de Málaga is the oldest of the city's societies after the Town Council. One of its first concerns was to create a public library, when the Great Library of Paris did not yet exist.

It is housed in the old Jesuit College, which after their expulsion was refurbished and adapted around the courtyard and overhanging gallery, with several rooms and a "courtroom". The building also housed some of the most important Malaga institutions of the Enlightenment, such as the Montepío de Cosecheros of the bishopric of Malaga or the Maritime and Land Consulate, an institution for which the building - declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in 1923 - ended up being called 'Casa del Consulado' (House of the Consulate).
