El Parlamento marroquí traza su estrategia de aproximación a la Unión Europea

Rachid Talbi Alami, President of the House of Representatives, and Naam Mayara, President of the House of Councillors, led a coordination meeting to reorganise the joint parliamentary committee between Morocco and the European Union. According to a joint communiqué, following the meeting, the chairmanship of the joint parliamentary committee was agreed upon. From now on, this committee will be chaired by parliamentary councillor Lahcen Haddad of the Istiqlali party group, while Mohamed Moubdi of the Haraki group will be vice-chairman.
Haddad stressed the need to adopt a new perspective in line with the new composition of the Moroccan parliament and "his desire to boost relations between Morocco and the European Union", according to L'Opinion Maroc. This aspiration, in the words of the new president of the commission, "reflects Morocco's ambition for a new multilateral and political partnership, taking into account developments in the Euro-Mediterranean and African space". Haddad also insisted on creating "a new model of partnership and a policy of good neighbourliness between Europe and its southern Mediterranean partners, in full respect of the strategic interests of both parties".

Alami and Mayara reiterated Haddaq's declarations, stressing "the need for mutual attachment to the exemplary, rich and multidimensional Moroccan-European partnership, the fruit of a construction and effort spanning almost half a century". Moreover, the Presidents of the two Chambers called for "working for the preservation and development of this partnership in its various dimensions: political, social, economic and security". They also pointed out the importance of strengthening dialogue with Brussels with the aim of cooperating on issues of common interest, such as security, terrorism, immigration and the environment.
During the meeting, the importance of taking advantage of the opportunities available, especially those related to health, environmental and economic challenges, was also underlined. These challenges require strong Euro-Moroccan spaces for dialogue and consultation in order to exchange experiences and practices, as reported by the Alawi news agency MapNews. The leaders of the Chambers concluded the assembly by assuring that this restructuring of the joint commission between Morocco and the European Union "will give a renewed echo to the strategic nature of the Kingdom's relationship with Europe".

Rabat and Brussels have agreements on various matters. Last month, the third session of the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement between Morocco and the European Union was held on the 11th and 12th. The meeting also laid the groundwork for fisheries treaties between the two countries for 2022. Rabat and Brussels have also strengthened their cooperation on environmental issues under the "Green Partnership" project. The two parties have pledged to collaborate in the fight against global warming and to promote green energy, an area in which Morocco has become an example in the region.
