Following the meeting of a joint security committee, Morocco and Germany have agreed to step up their operational cooperation in the fight against terrorism and cross-border extremism, as well as cross-border and organised crime, including drug trafficking, illegal migration and migrant smuggling, human trafficking, cybercrime and document fraud. Morocco is a "key actor" in the fight against terrorism, said NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy Javier Colomina Piriz, who described the Kingdom as a "very important partner" for the Atlantic Alliance.

In accordance with the national laws of both countries, this bilateral operational cooperation is based on the exchange of best practices and mechanisms for the early targeting and identification of extremists and recruitment routes and movement of fighters through the ranks, specified a press release from the Directorate General of National Security (DGSN), following the meeting of a joint security committee.

This joint security committee is composed of the Centre for International Police Cooperation at the DGSN and Liaison Officers attached to the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Rabat, according to the same source.

The two sides agreed to strengthen and develop cooperation in these areas in the future, pursuing common interests and commitments, with firm faith and determination to protect the security of both countries against all threats, the communiqué concluded.

In a statement to M24, MAP's 24-hour news channel, at the end of his interviews with representatives of the national departments following the cooperation and partnership programme with NATO, Colomina Piriz welcomed the "enormous responsibility" that Morocco has decided to assume in the fight against terrorism. He also highlighted the "practical cooperation" that the Atlantic Alliance maintains with the Moroccan military authorities and the "important political dialogue" it maintains with the Kingdom, recalling in this respect that Morocco is a member of the Mediterranean Dialogue.

Colomina Piriz, who is on a working visit to the Kingdom, said he was "very satisfied" with the high-level talks he held with the Moroccan authorities to intensify this dialogue and make it "more regular and substantial", stressing the need to revitalise it, and took the opportunity to express the desire to continue deepening the "enormously satisfactory" partnership that NATO maintains with Morocco.
