Morocco and Libya strengthen ties for the joint development of both countries. The two nations have just moved closer together to begin looking for new avenues of mutual cooperation to boost their economic development. To this end, they have conducted a review of their relationship and the prospects for developing joint work in the field of strategic planning.

This study followed a meeting in Rabat between the Moroccan High Commissioner for Planning (HCP) and the Libyan Planning Council. The event was attended by the highest representatives of each institutional body. Ahmed Lahlimi Alami, the director of the Alawi institution, and Meftah Abdelwahed, the president of the aforementioned institution on the Libyan side. However, the meeting was also marked by the presence of several officials from both sides, including the Libyan ambassador to the Kingdom, Ibrahim Ataweel.

This meeting served to build bridges between the two countries. They discussed new ways and opportunities to strengthen positions and develop cooperation between the two institutions. Both countries agreed that this is of vital importance for the economic development of each area.

"This is the beginning of a fruitful cooperation that will be based on permanent coordination and a vision for the future," said the Libyan Council President.

Both countries stressed during the meeting the importance of building new economic agreements. Lahlimi pointed out that Libya is a brother country for Morocco, a region with which they have maintained historical relations over the years that have allowed them to advance as nations. For his part, the Libyan representative assured that this meeting is the basis for an exchange of experiences and knowledge that will allow them to cooperate even more.

The HCP concluded by referring to the importance of good planning between countries for joint development. Lahlimi said that at this time and due to the current global crisis situation between the coronavirus pandemic and the war in Ukraine, it is time to collaborate in key sectors and in the field of planning and statistical studies.

In particular, the official stressed that one of these challenges is climate change and the current geopolitical situation marked by war. Lahlimi recalled that Morocco has been a pioneer in recent years in the fight against global warming and the emission of harmful environmental gases. The Maghreb country is striving to implement leading projects that are leading to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) both globally and within the nation itself.

Lahlimi highlighted that this priority for sustainability and its development is due to the implementation of the New Model for Development (NMD), one of the most ambitious programmes of the North African country. Thanks to this programme, the Kingdom will try to improve the economic situation of Moroccans and the national economy. In large part, this effort will be due to the development of sustainable economy and renewable energies.

Libya highlighted Morocco's work in the fight against climate change and applauded the major decisions taken by the Alawi kingdom on this issue. Abdelwahed praised the Maghreb country's experience in this regard, recalling the important achievements it has made over the years thanks to renewable energies. He also highlighted Morocco's track record in planning projects that have reaped great benefits for the nation. For this reason, Libya insisted that its regional neighbour is a very good choice for mutual cooperation.

Finally, Libya recalled what the HCP means for a country like Morocco and how its efforts are positioning the Kingdom in a strategic position in the global economy and politics. The North African country said that it is a very prestigious organisation and that, thanks to its experience, Libya will be able to make use of the institution's studies to continue developing and rebuilding its economy.
