Morocco will once again be a member of the Peace and Security Council, the supreme decision-making body of the African Union. At the voting session of the Executive Council, the Alawite kingdom obtained two thirds of the votes, thus becoming a member of the Council for a new three-year term.

This decision confirms the trust placed in Rabat by its African peers, a trust with which it intends to work together to continue building steps towards "peace and stability".

Moreover, this second re-election is evidence of Morocco's growing influence on the African continent as a regional power in significant areas such as diplomacy. Since Morocco was elected to the same Council in 2018, the Alawi kingdom has fostered an arduous diplomacy with countries such as Israel, as a result of the Abraham Accords, as well as the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and Latin American countries.

The re-election also demonstrates Morocco's role as a country committed to the main challenges now facing the African continent: the fight against climate change, the fight against terrorism, violent extremism and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.

This meeting took place in the framework of the 40th ordinary session of the Executive Council, at the headquarters in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. Representing the Moroccan delegation, the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, headed the Kingdom's representation and recalled Morocco's contribution to "the improvement of working methods and the establishment of good practices".

In addition, during the course of the session, Morocco recalled its firm commitment to the eradication of the COVID-19 pandemic. Bourita reaffirmed its role in line with the "principle of active solidarity".

In this vein, the minister affirmed Morocco's ambition to "create an integrated Africa and a collective vision at all levels, including the political and economic levels. An Africa united and in solidarity". As a result of the pandemic, Bourita pointed out that COVID has shown that "without health security, there is no global security", which means that "all sectors are at risk".

He reaffirmed Morocco's support for "the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention of the African Union (CDC Afrique)" and praised "the enormous work done by the African Vaccine Procurement Task Team (AVATT) to obtain millions of doses of vaccines for our continent".

He concluded by underlining the African Union's responsibility to "develop a common vision" and to "interact with partners to meet the socio-economic challenges generated by the pandemic".

A tool for conflict resolution

Morocco, along with 14 other members and as new members of the Peace Council, will have the mission of promoting both the prevention and the resolution and management of the current conflicts that plague some African countries.

In this way, the Council will try to provide solutions in a context in which the continent is being hit by various violent episodes, including a succession of coups d'états that have destabilised regional security. This is the case of states such as Guinea Conakry, Burkina Faso, Sudan and, most recently, Guinea Bissau.

In addition to these violent episodes, the Council will have to confront a series of challenges that have arisen as a consequence of instability. Poverty, the humanitarian crisis, terrorism, the environmental challenge and political instability are all issues that will be on the Council's table and that it will have to address in order to preserve peace at a convulsive and challenging time.
