The Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, has highlighted the important contribution of the Marrakech Pact on Migration during an interview with the official news agency MAP.

During a speech delivered on behalf of the countries championing the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) at the United Nations Economic and Social Council's High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, Bourita stressed that since the adoption of the Compact in December 2018, the UN has been able to implement important initiatives such as the creation of the UN Network on Migration.

The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration was formally adopted in December 2018 in Marrakech during the UN Intergovernmental Conference on Migration in the Ochre City. This non-binding global compact is based on values such as state sovereignty, shared responsibility, non-discrimination and human rights. It recognises that a cooperative approach is needed to maximise the overall benefits of migration, while mitigating its risks and challenges for individuals and communities in countries of origin, transit and destination.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres stressed at the time that the Pact is a governance approach that should help not only migrants, but also communities of origin and host communities. It also proposes a framework for reflection on strategies to support development in countries of origin. "Migration should be an act of choice and never of desperation," he added.

Bourita, for his part, explained during his speech that the WGP Champions initiative represents an open informal group of States committed to the effective implementation of the Compact, respecting its 360-degree vision and guiding principles, and is based on the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

"Indeed, we have the opportunity at this high-level political forum to articulate the WGP targets that we must accelerate to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ensuring an inclusive and resilient post-pandemic recovery, leaving no one behind," the minister argued.
