The leader of the opposition, Pablo Casado, held a meeting on Tuesday with the Moroccan ambassador, Karima Benyaich. The meeting, which took place at the headquarters of the Popular Party, was aimed mainly at analysing co-operation between the two countries in economic and social matters and in combating Jihadist terrorism, but above all illegal immigration.

The meeting followed Casado's request for the repatriation of Moroccan migrants who had arrived illegally in the Canary Islands. The leader of the Popular Party also stated that we are facing "the worst migration crisis" since 2006.

Last Saturday he travelled to Gran Canaria to find out about the situation on the islands. During his visit to the island he declared that Sánchez "is responsible for the migration crisis in the Canary Islands due to the effect of the so-called Aquarius, the Open Arms, papers for all".

In his twitter account, the leader of the Popular Party wrote that illegal immigration has shot up 100% in the Canary Islands. He also called for international cooperation, funds for NGOs and media such as the SIVE radar, which he said was inactive.

During his visit to Gran Canaria, he also went to the Arguineguín dock, a symbolic location for this crisis, and reproached the government for "not being able to turn the Canary Islands into Lampedusa and Lesbos. Nor can it use the archipelago as a migratory buffer".

In this context, the leader of the PP held a meeting with the Moroccan ambassador to Spain with the aim of "strengthening relations" between the two countries, which are "neighbours and allies".

After the meeting with Casado, the Moroccan ambassador made a statement to the Sixth Meeting, in which she said that her country works closely with the Ministry of the Interior on a permanent basis and maintains 'excellent' relations with Spain, in the political, economic and social fields.
