The restructuring of the Sudanese Armed Forces has been launched. According to Al-Ain, two meetings took place on Wednesday at the headquarters of the General Command of the Sudanese Armed Forces to discuss several issues, especially the security situation.

The first meeting of the Sudanese Army Command Authority was chaired by the Commander-in-Chief and Lieutenant General of the Armed Forces, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, followed by a meeting of the military wing of the Sovereign Transitional Council. The meeting was also attended by the Commander of the 'Rapid Support Forces', Muhammad Hamdan Diqlo, the Chief of Army Staff, Muhammad Othman al-Hussein, and several leaders of the Armed Forces.

These meetings have been aimed at discussing peace negotiations with the armed fighting movements and security arrangements, in addition to the incident involving the member of the Sovereign Transitional Council, Lieutenant General Shamsuddin Kabashi.

It had been several months since the main officers of the Sudanese armed forces had met, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Already in October last year, Al-Burhan issued a decision to restructure the Sudanese Army, in order to abolish the system of 'Joint Chiefs of Staff' established by deposed President Omar al-Bashir and to return to the old system.

The restructuring decision included returning the Sudanese Army to four armed arms instead of three, after separating the area defence from the area force, which had been merged with the previous regime.

The Sovereign Council, chaired by General Al-Burhan, was established in August last year, as a body composed largely of civilians, to oversee Sudan's transition, according to the terms of an agreement between the military council that succeeded Al-Bashir and the protest leaders.

A few days ago, Al-Burhan, in his speech to the Sudanese people on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha, called for strengthening national unity, cooperation and solidarity, at a time when the country is experiencing "exceptional circumstances", imposed by the difficulty of the country's transition and the quest for the rule of law. In his public demonstration, the general called on young people to lead the revolution and change in the building of a new nation.
