Saudi Energy Minister Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz today announced the discovery of two new unconventional natural gas fields by state-owned oil company Aramco in the country's Eastern Province.

According to the department's statement, the oil company discovered the first field 142 kilometres southwest of the city of Al Hofuf and named it Awtad, following the nomenclature of the main gas wells in the area.

It highlights the 'Awtad 108001' well, which has a capacity of ten million cubic feet per day and fills 740 barrels of condensate, while the 'Awtad 100921' well has a capacity of 16.9 million cubic feet per day, with about 165 barrels of condensate.

"The second field is Al Dahnaa, was discovered 230 kilometres west of the city of Al Dhahran, and gas started flowing from the 'Al Dahnaa 4' well, with a capacity of 8.1 million cubic feet per day, and from 'Dahnaa 370100', with a rate of 17.5 million cubic metres with 362 barrels of condensate," detailed the statement.

Aramco, the world's largest oil company, recently announced its intention to increase Saudi Arabia's natural gas production to put the country in third place among the world's largest producers by the end of the decade.

The company aims to raise production of gas for sale to 2.2 billion cubic feet per day by 2036, with an additional 425 million cubic feet per day of ethane.

Saudi Arabia's gas reserves are estimated at 319.5 trillion cubic metres, according to the latest official announcement in January 2019.
