Spinelli Group backs EU constitutional reform
The Spinelli Group's European initiative has reaffirmed its support for a new constitutional plan for the European Union. In this line, the initiative seeks to promote the creation of a financial and fiscal union that maintains and reaffirms European sovereignty.
With the Future of Europe Conference taking place, the Spinelli Group has underlined the importance of having the Manifesto that they already presented in 2018. In it, they advocate the search for federalism within the European Union by putting as protagonists a network of citizens, think tanks, NGOs, academics, writers and politicians who support the idea of a federal and united Europe.
According to the Manifesto "in the face of an unprecedented public health crisis and the corresponding collapse of its economies, Europe has reacted with unity and determination, pointing the way forward for the future of European integration".The Manifesto goes on to argue that the European initiative continues to strive "for a Union that is both a community of destiny and values, and a model for the new world that is taking shape".
Alongside this, they stress the importance of involving the social partners as "their efforts must be underpinned by a clear awareness that fundamental decisions on common indebtedness and taxation cannot remain indefinitely with national governments, but must be taken jointly in an effective, transparent and democratic manner".
Its members include internationally recognised personalities such as the Vice-President of the EPP Group in the European Parliament, Esteban González Pons, the former President of the European Parliament, José María Gil-Robles, the former Spanish President, Felipe González and the former High Representative of the European Union for the Common Foreign and Security Policy or the Secretary General of the Council, Javier Solana Madariaga, among others.
The reaffirmation of the Spinelli Group in this initiative has been made within the Europe Week, a day that has hosted the celebration of the Conference on the Future of Europe after President Macron gave the green light to the beginning of the resolution. Spain will host the start of the conference from 6 to 13 May after commemorating the Schuman Declaration on 9 May, a speech that laid the foundations for the European Union to "contribute to world peace through concrete achievements".
The spirit of the Conference aims to "achieve a joint reflection among the members of the Union on the functioning of the Union" as well as to provide solutions to the new challenges that 21st century society is facing in terms of health, immigration, the economic crisis and the recent exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union as a result of the entry into force of the Withdrawal Agreement.
