The frivolities of Boris

The crisis between London and Paris over immigrants is worsened by Boris Johnson's unacceptable attitude.

The crisis that has been created between two countries such as France and the United Kingdom by the frivolous ways used by the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, is very serious. We are talking about the lives of human beings who struggle to achieve a dignified life in those more developed countries that need labour and offer job opportunities, but are faced with the risk of irregular and disorderly immigration that creates problems of xenophobia and racism, as well as the loophole often used by terrorist groups.

It is a cruel reality that does not mean that immigration is directly related to terrorism at all. There are millions of immigrants in the world and only a few, I know too many for what should be, but active and ruthless terrorists who strike wherever and whenever they have the chance. The crisis between Paris and London is about Boris Johnson's tweet on social media about the crisis of migrants trying to reach the UK from the French town of Calais, across the English Channel.

The Prime Minister's accusations that the French police are not doing everything they can to control the situation have created enormous unease, but what has most annoyed the French President, Emmanuel Macron, is the lack of respect because he said: "Communication between governments is not done with a tweet". The problem itself is very serious and highlights the urgent need for a clear and solvent EU policy on immigration that addresses all possibilities and circumstances and nips in the bud the actions of the mafias that traffic in human beings, be it from London with those who gather in Calais, be it at the Polish border with Belarus or those who arrive in Spain and Italy in dingy boats from North Africa. But it is also framed by the use and abuse of absolutely unacceptable forms. Populism believes that anything goes, that it can promise what the people need, even if it knows it is impossible to deliver in order to achieve power, that any supposedly modern witticism is funny, even if it means contempt and disrespect, and that the only thing that counts is to have the trend in the right direction, even if the decisions are negative and counterproductive for the interests of the citizens.

The British people are suffering the consequences of a Brexit that is the result of fake news and disinformation campaigns, with Boris Johnson taking advantage of the situation to become prime minister. The citizens are paying for it and he is looking for an external enemy as some leaders do.
