Algeria suspended "immediately" today the treaty of friendship, good neighbourliness and cooperation with Spain, signed on 8 October 2002, because of its "unjustifiable" position on Western Sahara, the Presidency of the Republic announced.

"The Spanish authorities have launched a campaign to justify the position they have adopted on Western Sahara, a violation of their legal, moral and political obligations as administrator of the territory which weighs on the Kingdom of Spain," the same source said.

Algeria considers as "unjustifiable" the change of position of Spain, which supported on 18 March the Moroccan proposal for autonomy over the Spanish colony.
