Last March, the two neighbouring countries held the 8th session of the High Joint Commission in Rabat, the Moroccan capital, co-chaired by Aziz Akhannouch, head of the Moroccan government, and Mohamed Ould Bilal Messoud, the Mauritanian Prime Minister, which resulted in the signing of 13 cooperation agreements and a memorandum of understanding.

At this March summit, progress was made in close cooperation in various fields such as agriculture, the farming sector, fisheries and aquaculture, environmental protection and sustainable development, tourism, development of the industrial sector, health, vocational training, spatial planning, town planning and housing, and investment in various businesses.

Following this March summit, the Mauritanian Prime Minister stressed the need for both countries to "reinforce" "joint action, by updating and extending the instruments" of cooperation between Rabat and Nouakchott. According to Messoud, this coordination between the two would guarantee "compatibility with the objectives set, and with the demands of the new realities of our countries and the world around us".

Meanwhile, according to La VIE éco, Aziz Akhannouch pointed out that this latest meeting in Rabat served to confirm the two countries' efforts to coordinate in various fields. It was also an opportunity to reflect on the means necessary to promote the economic development of the two countries.

This new cooperation between Morocco and Mauritania was necessary due to the current context in the Maghreb and in the world in general, affected by major challenges such as the economic crisis or the current conflicts.

Aziz Akhannouch said at the time that "the collective and sincere will of our two countries will allow us to win the bet, face the challenges and achieve the objective of raising the level of our distinguished relations in various fields".

At the March meeting in Rabat, the two countries also reached a consensus on relevant issues such as the situation in the Maghreb and in the Arab world in general, and the conflicts that continue to develop in the Sahel, as well as the situation in Western Sahara, a region for which the Alaouite kingdom proposes a formula of broad autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty within the postulates of the UN, which receives strong international support, including from countries such as the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates and Spain.
