The fight against Daesh continues. Despite the fact that the terrorist organisation managed to fall at the hands of Western coalition forces, Daesh has not disappeared, and its threat is still present in Syria and Iraq, countries where they tried to establish a supposed Caliphate.

In the latest anti-terrorist operations, Iraqi security forces claim to have arrested Daesh's military advisor in Mosul, specifically Nineveh, the ancient capital of the Assyrians, which after the siege of the terrorists was reduced to rubble. During the siege, the constant attacks that were committed destroyed archaeological heritage of great importance and what survived was sold on the black market.

In a statement issued by the National Security Agency they point out that the terrorist was overthrown after entering the country from one of the neighbouring states. In addition, they have pointed out that "he is included in several administrative and financial positions in Daesh gangs, the most important of which is the emir of one of the provinces of the so-called state of Gezira, in addition to the financial officer of the same state". They also indicate that "he was referred to the judicial authorities to take the necessary measures against him".

Iraq continues to carry out major counter-terrorism operations to reduce the threat of Daesh in the area. The latest was carried out just a few weeks ago against an important jihadist leader who was allegedly responsible for carrying out an attack that killed 360 people in 2016. It was followed by the arrest of Sami Jasim Muhamad al-Jaburi, a Daesh fundamentalist who is said to have been organising the group's finances and maintaining constant communication with former jihadist leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

 Defeat of Daesh?

On 6 December 2017, Russia and the Syrian National Army announced the defeat of Daesh in Syria, ending an important stage of the civil war. Three days later, Iraq declared the same defeat in the country as a result of the anti-terrorist operation led by the United States and other Western forces that managed to dismantle the sieges of important cities such as Mosul, occupied by Daesh since 2014.

In Syria, the fight waged openly against Daesh by the International Coalition against the terrorist group and the operations carried out by the Kurds in the People's Protection Units (YPG) and the Women's Protection Units (YPJ) managed to change the course of terrorism in the area.

From occupying and establishing its attempt at a Caliphate in important cities such as Raqa in Syria and Mosul in Iraq, Daesh was reduced to a network that did not have a structured organisation after the fall of important leaders.

However, the defeat of Daesh does not mean its disappearance. The group's modus operandi has changed, and recruitment and isolated attacks are now part of its main operations. In Al-Roj and Al-Hol, recruitment and recruitment have been the main methods by which they have tried to grow the so-called sleeper cells set up in the sub-structures of the camps.

In this recruitment, women who have been widowed by the death of their husbands, former Daesh members, or who have suffered their arrest, have played a fundamental role in the propagation of their radicalism, as well as in the education of children.

On the other hand, in Syria and Iraq, despite their weakening, terrorists continue to settle in regions such as Idlib, where the different terrorist groups are battling for control of the region. In other countries such as Afghanistan, the arrival of the Taliban has led to a succession of different attacks perpetrated by ISIS-K, which currently seek to highlight the lack of control and security maintained by the Taliban in the country.

In this regard, it is feared that the future withdrawal of the United States from Iraq will lead to an increase in terrorist attacks in the country and increase their presence in the area, making it more difficult to prevent their attacks and movements.

Jihadist terrorism continues to emerge as a global threat that seeks to sow chaos and violence in order to establish terror. Counter-terrorism operations continue to play an important role in bringing it down, which, despite the efforts made, remains one of the main challenges to international security.
