The United Arab Emirates and Turkey showed closeness and discussed important international issues during a meeting between their respective foreign ministers, Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan and Mevlut Cavusoglu, in the UAE.

The Emirati and Turkish Foreign Ministers discussed the prospects for bilateral cooperation and a number of regional and international issues of current importance. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan received Mevlut Cavusoglu in Abu Dhabi and discussed the prospects of bilateral cooperation and partnership between the two countries and efforts to enhance them in order to achieve the common interests of the two countries and their peoples, as reported by the official Emirati news agency WAM.

The Emirati-Turkish dialogue covered a number of issues of common interest, such as the current global food and energy crisis, which has been aggravated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, affecting the grain and cereal trade, in which Ukraine and Russia are major players in terms of production, This has led to a rise in prices and problems in the energy supply of gas and oil, an area in which Russia has a preeminent position despite the economic sanctions imposed by the West for the military operation in Ukraine.

Regarding the war on Ukrainian territory, Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan congratulated Mevlut Cavusoglu on the resumption of the agreement to export grain across the Black Sea to international markets. Russia backed down and announced its re-entry into the grain deal with Ukraine. Grain and fertiliser exports across the Black Sea returned to some normality on Wednesday after Russia announced it had rejoined the Turkish and UN-brokered deal with Ukraine to unblock ports and secure supplies.

Turkey is playing a major role in the resumption of the Ukrainian grain trade and, in fact, Ottoman President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced Friday that Russia will send free grain to poor African countries to tackle the current food crisis, just after contacts with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Emirati Foreign Minister praised the Eurasian country's great efforts to further implement the agreement, which it signed last July in Istanbul with the Russian Federation and Ukraine, with the participation of the United Nations.

These steps could lead to a rapprochement of positions that could settle once and for all the frozen conflict in Ukraine, which began with the invasion dictated by President Vladimir Putin last February. In recent months Turkey has shown itself to be a mediator between the West, which has rejected the military operation on Ukrainian territory, and Russia.

The UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation also affirmed his enthusiasm for efforts to enhance bilateral cooperation with Turkey in all fields in a way that supports development paths in both countries and brings benefits to both nations. A relationship that can be beneficial for Turkey, which has experienced a difficult economic situation in recent years with high inflation and a sharp depreciation of the Turkish lira, especially given the strong economic dynamics of the UAE, one of the most financially prominent countries in the Gulf area.

A year ago, the UAE even allocated a $10 billion fund to invest in Turkey, following a meeting between Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan, who was recently appointed president of the UAE.

Turkey and the UAE have already signed bilateral cooperation agreements in multiple fields, including trade, energy and the environment, and now continue to deepen their mutual relationship.
