Emirates successfully tests Chinese COVID-19 vaccine on more than 5000 volunteers
"Several vaccines are in phase three of clinical trials and we all hope that effective vaccines will come out of them that will help people not get infected. With these words, World Health Organization Director Tedros Adhanom Gebreyesus highlighted during his regular conference in Geneva some of the major advances in the race to find an antidote to end COVID-19. Three weeks ago, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) began Phase III trials of the vaccine, working with Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinopharm to combat COVID-19, one of the most advanced trials in the world. The results of this trial - in which more than 5,000 volunteers have participated - are showing the success of this procedure.
The 5,000th vaccine was administered in the presence of the acting undersecretary of the Department of Health, Dr Jamal Al-Kaabi, at the registration and testing centre that was recently established for this purpose, according to reports from several locations. The third phase of the trial, which began in the Gulf nation's capital on 16 July, was made possible by the "common commitment" that encouraged volunteers of more than 80 nationalities to participate in the experiment.
"We have reached 5,000 vaccine recipients faster than we expected, and we believe that our trials are progressing faster than anywhere else in the world, thanks to the patriotic spirit of volunteerism and the strength of the health care system in the UAE," said the Chairman of the Infectious Disease and Infection Control Health Council, Nawal Ahmed Mohammed Al - Kaabi. He also thanked the volunteers, medical staff and administration for their work in achieving this success.
This trial was conducted under the direction of G42 Healthcare, in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Health Department, the Emirates Ministry of Health and Prevention and the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (SEHA). G42 Healtchare's CEO has highlighted the benefits of becoming a volunteer. "I urge the country's residents to continue to volunteer and benefit from the centres spread throughout the Emirates of Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, which will facilitate registration, medical examination and vaccination procedures," he said.
Among the more than 5,000 volunteers who have already received the vaccine from the Emirates are people of different ages, ranging from 18 to 60.
