Nobel Peace Laureates, heads of state and leaders from Latin America and the Caribbean will attend CAF event in New York
Latin America and the Caribbean must put their foot on the accelerator to advance in the achievement of the sustainable development goals and targets of the 2030 Agenda. Under this premise and the need to raise the region's voice on the global stage to join allies in this common objective, CAF -development bank of Latin America- will hold the event "Many voices, one region: Latin America and the Caribbean working together on the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development" on September 19-20 in New York.
CAF will bring together more than 50 global leaders to identify opportunities in which the public and private sector, academia and civil society can work together on pressing issues such as climate action, education, food security, gender, inclusion, diversity, human rights, among others.
Within the framework of the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations, and the commemoration of CAF's 10 years as a permanent observer in this multilateral space, the voices of Nobel Peace Laureates Rigoberta Menchú, Adolfo Pérez Esquivel and Juan Manuel Santos will be heard, with words from the President of Argentina, Alberto Fernández.
CAF's Executive President, Sergio Díaz-Granados, together with the Corporate Vice President of Strategic Programming, Christian Asinelli, will moderate the discussions, which will also include the President of Guyana, Irfaan Ali, and leaders from the private sector and civil society, such as Qu Dongyu, Director General of the FAO; Achim Steiner, Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP); Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD); and Luis Felipe López-Calva, UNDP Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean.
The two-day meeting will also hear from Epsy Campbell, former Vice President of Costa Rica; Kate Behncken, Vice President of Philanthropy at Microsoft; Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University; Darren Ware, Senior Vice President of Government Relations at Mastercard; Alejandro Werner, Director of the Institute of the Americas, Georgetown; Eglantina Zingg, Founder and CEO of Goleadoras. org; the former presidents of Spain and Panama, José María Aznar and Martín Torrijos; Dan Restrepo, former director for Western Hemisphere Affairs of the US National Security Council; and representatives from 17 universities in the Americas, among others.
The genesis of the SDGs and the redefinition of development; food security in Latin America and the Caribbean: challenges, strategies and priority actions; the sustainability of coffee farmers in the region; how to transform education from an innovative perspective; sport as a key investment for the inclusion of people with disabilities; and dialogues for peace are some of the central themes that will be addressed during the event.
