Morocco announced that, as of today, and for two weeks if all goes well, all international flights and routes will be suspended due to the new mutation of the coronavirus. The news has caused quite a stir, especially for those who were enjoying the Alawi country and those who, for work or business, have to be on the road all the time. The problem has exacerbated the situation, as customers who have contracted with their airlines to fly abroad do not know what will happen to their money. Royal Air Maroc (RAM), the flag carrier and one of the main airlines flying to the Kingdom, has commented on these events and issued a statement indicating that customers who had purchased their tickets will receive benefits due to the inconvenience caused.

RAM offers passengers on its flights two options. The first is to change the tickets of people who want to travel to or from Morocco to other destinations. If they want to change their trip, they will be able to do so with an initial travel date from 30 November to 13 December. The company is trying to please its customers by offering them the option of making a change without penalty. The only thing they may have to pay is the difference in fare for a new travel date until 31 January 2022.

On the other hand, for those who do not want to choose to change, there is the option of a cash refund. This will take the form of a non-transferable nominative credit, which can be claimed for 12 months from the date of issue. The company has specified that it will be refundable at the end of its validity if it is not used and at the customer's request, it will have three months at the latest after its expiry.

These are the two alternatives offered by the brand to its travellers in an attempt to prevent them from lodging any complaints due to the cancellation of flights by the Moroccan authorities. The only requirement offered by the company is that customers must go to the place where they originally purchased their ticket to apply for a credit or change of dates.

The new variant of COVID-19 is starting to cause inconvenience in countries, some of which, such as Morocco, have already begun to take measures to protect themselves against this new strain. The inter-ministerial committee in charge of coordinating international travel measures to prevent the virus has taken the decision to stop international travel, arguing that "it is necessary to preserve Morocco's achievements in the fight against the pandemic and to protect the health of its citizens".

Fearing too many infections, the Kingdom has also decided to suspend all direct flights and the two sea routes linking it to France, and on Friday banned the entry of travellers from South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, Esuatini, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

The omicron variant has been causing a stir since the first cases were detected in South Africa in early November. The new strain has already been detected in Europe in countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Denmark, Austria and the UK, but cases have also started to spread to Hong Kong and Israel. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has already stated that the risk of ichthyosis is very high and that there may be new waves with serious consequences, as this mutation is highly contagious and the vaccine may not be as effective in repelling this new variant of the virus.
