Morocco, committed to a democratic future in Libya
Morocco has reaffirmed its firm commitment to contribute to a political and consensual solution to the Libyan crisis. The Kingdom has been working with all parties involved to promote a constructive dialogue that will lead the oil-rich country to a solution that reflects the interests of all Libyans. Morocco has pointed out that stability and reconciliation are key to success in Libya and has pledged to continue to support all factions involved to achieve a peaceful solution.
Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita reaffirmed Morocco's commitment to maintaining peace and stability in Libya during the African Union Peace and Security Council meeting. Bourita stressed Morocco's "clear and constant" position on the Libyan conflict and explained that his country is committed to supporting mediation efforts with the aim of building a strong and democratic Libya capable of contributing to the advancement of the integration of the Maghreb. Bourita also noted that regional cooperation is crucial to address the conflict and achieve peace and stability in the region.
Libya has been suffering from political problems for a decade. Bourita has described Libya as a regional 'key partner'. The Moroccan government has shown its support for efforts to help the Libyans achieve a lasting, negotiated solution to their problems. Moreover, the Kingdom has taken various actions to support Libya, contributing to the peace process with a series of high-level meetings, as well as engaging in humanitarian initiatives aimed at helping Libyan citizens affected by the war. Rabat has also helped Libya to improve its infrastructure, such as building roads and modernising the electricity grid.
Morocco's support for Libya is based on the belief that stability in Libya is essential for the stability of the entire region. It is hoped that joint efforts by Morocco and other countries will help achieve peace and political stability in Libya. This could bring numerous benefits to the region, including an overall improvement in security, the economy and development. King Mohamed VI has recalled Morocco's efforts to help rival Libyan factions find an agreement and put an end to the plight of Libyan citizens, who have been in a vulnerable situation and victims of political crises and violence for the past 10 years.
The solution to the problem in Libya requires a consensual legislative framework to organise presidential and parliamentary elections. Bourita stressed this point, in addition to underlining Morocco's commitment to the UN-led political process. The Moroccan minister stressed the importance of holding dialogue meetings between rival Libyan factions to reach an agreement to facilitate an end to the crisis.
Morocco has offered its continued support to the UN in its efforts to bring peace and stability to Libya. This includes supporting its mediation efforts, as well as offering political, diplomatic and economic assistance. These efforts have been acknowledged and appreciated by Libyan officials and the UN. The UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, praised in particular the role played by Rabat in the peace process.
